Dance/Drama

Sean Stirling is part of a band called “Running with Scissors”. The band played at the SmokeFreeRockquest in Auckland and made it through to the Regional Finals.
After Glow, Gala Morris and Lewis MacDonald performed at the North Shore Regional Finals where Gala won the best original song with her composition “November”
Laura Eaton won Best Use of Technique by an Actor, 2010 University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival held at Albany Junior High.
Joshua Davy and Seamus Ford were selected to perform in the National Youth Theatre Company production of Peter Pan at the Aotea Centre.
Year 10 Dance Class was at the Logan Campbell Centre defending the title that last years dance class won. This was a daunting task for this group’s first performance together winning the award for Best Entertainers.

Co-Curricular

Jerry Yelich-O’Connor
has won the Globe Theatre, Shakespare Society National Static Image Contest. She wins $250 and her image will be displayed at the new Globe, London, for the next six weeks.
Olivia Stacy has been selected by the Sea Cadet Corp, New Zealand Cadet Forces to attend the New Zealand Canada Friendship Exchange. The exchange  programme involves cadets from both countries extending their knowledge of each country’s unique
cultures and cadet activities. This year in particular cadets will be representing New Zealand at the Hyack Parade with 350 cadets from Vancouver and the Canadian Navy’s 100th Anniversary Fleet Review. Cadets will also be crossing the border to the United States to be hosted on a US Naval Air Station at Whidbey Island.
Jeremy Marino has been selected as a volunteer on the Spirit of Adventure.
Amelia MacDonald won the Senior Speech final. Ameila’s speech was on “Love”. The runner up was David Arrow who gave an entertaining warning about the dangers of “Facebook”.
Third was Victoria Timmins who provided great insight into the bard, the famous William Shakespeare.
Amelia went on to represent TGS at the Lions Young Speechmaker regional contest. She won, and will now attend the National final in Napier.
Ireland Essay Results
Special Certificates of Merit for Ani McGahan and Rory Bingham ($100 vouchers) and a Certificate of Merit for Jarryd Walker. ($50 voucher). Again TGS students have won more awards in this contest than any other school in the country.

Prefects
30 Prefects attended a three day training camp, PTP, run through AUT, focussing on goal setting, planning, leadership qualities, communication skills and team building.
Six prefects attended the International Women’s Day breakfast run by UNIFEM.
The Head Prefects, Amelia MacDonald, William  Godfrey, Laura Eaton and Michael Ross attended the Young Leaders’ Day run by the Halogen Foundation.

 

 
The Special Education Committee organised 12 prefect volunteers to help run the Special Olympics Athletics ribbon day at Sovereign Stadium. The Wilson Home Committee sought students from Years 12 and 13 to volunteer at the Wilson Home on a regular basis.
The Community Relations Committee organised 19 volunteers to collect for the Child Cancer Street Appeal.

House Leaders

The 24 House Leaders attended a leadership training day at the YMCA focussing on communication skills, leadership qualities, public speaking and team building.
The House Leaders encouraged participation in swimming sports, athletics days and mufti day. They were integral in running the Swimming and Athletics relay challenges and the House Chant challenge. They regularly presented at House assemblies.

Peer Mentors
Senior students will be paired with Year 9 students to work individually on aspects of school life and to develop confidence, self-management and resilience skills. This follows on from the highly successful Peer Support programme.

Youth Parliament, Wellington

Amelia MacDonald, Head Girl has been selected to represent Phil Twyford, MP, at the 2010 Youth Parliament. This event happens once every three years. Students from across the country are selected to represent Members of Parliament in electorate and list seats.

Shore Youth Council

Year 13 students Danielle Thrussell and Sammy  Johnson along with Year 12 students Ana Snjegota and Kun Qian were selected as Shore Youth Councillors.
They attended a training camp early in the term and attend regular meetings with other North Shore schools’ representatives. Sammy Johnson was elected onto the Executive of the SYC.

PSSP (Peer Sexuality Support Programme)

Five Year 12 students have been selected to join the PSSP team in 2010. They are Hannah Brightley, George Edgar, Blake Rax, Ben Seaton and Becky Netting. They attended a 3 day training/leadership hui with other students from the Auckland region.

Raise Up Crew YMCA North Shore Student  Leadership Team
Students selected to represent Takapuna Grammar on the North Shore Raise Up Crew for 2010 are Monique Warder, Alex MacDonald and Kun Qian. They meet
regularly with students from other schools to organise events and activities for students on the North Shore.

Duke of Edinburgh
Over 30 students are currently working towards Bronze and Silver Awards.

World Vision Leadership

Helena Power and Ella Rudin have been selected to attend the World Vision 40 Hour Famine Student Leadership Summit in Ngaruawahia. TGS aims to win a top award again in 2010. Amelia MacDonald (Head Girl) has attended many events around New Zealand in her capacity as World Vision Ambassador.

Sir Peter Blake Youth Environment Forum, Wellington
Luke Carey has been selected as one of four Auckland representatives to the National Youth Environment Forum. This is a superb achievement and is the result of Luke’s long commitment and interest in environmental activities. As only two North Shore students were shortlisted for an interview, it is worthy to note that the other shortlisted student was Alice Burney (year 13).

Making a Difference: Sustainability Environmental Hui
Year 12 students Jodi Thomas, Gaby Miegeville-Little and Isabelle Verney were
selected to attend a student camp run by the Auckland Regional Council. Luke Carey was a leader at this camp.

Sir Peter Blake Trust Aotea/Great Barrier Island Coastal Clean Up
Organised by prefect Rosy Herstell, 11 students participated in this year’s coastal clean up. With Rosy were Margaret Palmer, Alice Burney, Isabel Herstell, Leisha Calder, Madison Atherfold, Jasmine Cullen,  Donna Lee, Matt Brokenshire, Marion Hubbard and Kaylee Lloyd.

Red Cross Committee
This year led by Monique Warder, the Red Cross  Committee has organised 35 collectors for the annual Red Cross week. They collected over $1,000 and were commended by the Auckland regional Red Cross organisers.

Academic
Edric Angkiriwang, Umar Kuddus, Neil Jadav, Kaito  Narita and Alex Miller
Entrepreneurial North Shore students from Excel Corporations, a student company, took out first place at the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme business presentation finals for North Shore and Rodney. The students impressed judges with their innovative Make a Million business board game for children.
Andy Sok, Gwan Ho Lee, Jonathan Tan, Young Min Lee, Kun Quian and Pheng Jiang, Advertising Design Services won the Benefitz Business Card competition
with each student director receiving 150 cards of their winning design.

Sport

Athletics

Jacko Gill
has been selected in the NZ U20 Team to go to the World Junior track and Field Championships. He has also been selected to attend the inaugural Youth Olympics in Singapore. This event is for U18 athletes so Jacko at 15 will probably be the youngest in his discipline. The event is limited to the top 16 shot putters from around the world. Jacko’s puts of 20.88m with the 5kg shot (U18) and 19.92m with the 6kg shot (U20) have been recognised as new Oceania area records. Both records were held by Australians.

Judo
Emma Rouse
has been selected for the New Zealand Judo Team to fight in both the Junior and Senior Women’s section.

Cheerleading
Olivia Brackenridge
competed with Mrs Higgins Team New Zealand at the ICU World Cheerleading Champs in Florida. The New Zealand team won the Bronze Medal in the Elite Co-ed Division. 87 countries compete in the World Champs so this is a huge credit to the team and a wonderful result for New Zealand.

Cross Country
Andrew Ranfo
rd placed 2nd in the senior category at North Harbour Cross Country and Liam Mullane placed 3rd in junior category.

Cycling
Harry Ross
has been selected for the U17 NZ Development Academy for Cycling.

Golf
Zain James and Tom Cardno
have been selected to attend the Auckland Secondary School Golf  Championships.

Hockey
Levi Jenkinson
selected to play in the National U21 Hockey Tournament for North Harbour in Palmerston North.

Netball
Aylah Murray and Tyana Rowe-Kurene
selected for the U17 Poi Tarawhiti o Te Raki Paewhenua North Harbour Maori Netball Development squad.

Orienteering
Jordan Griffiths
was selected as part of the Orienteering Auckland Secondary School team to compete in the Regional Schools Challenge at Queens  Birthday Weekend.

Rock Climbing
Chase Gatland
recently competed in the National Cup Climbing Competition in Christchurch and took 2nd place for Junior Males. He has also been selected in
to represent New Zealand for the 2010 World Youth Championships, Edinburgh Scotland.

Rowing

North Island Secondary School Rowing Championshipships - congratulations to our Director of Rowing, Martin Simoncelli, and to our dedicated  Takapuna Grammar School rowers who acquitted themselves well on and off the water, winning a total of
four medals – a bronze, two silvers and gold.
