Peer Programmes
Takapuna Grammar runs a number of Peer programmes where senior students are trained in specific areas to support junior students. The philosophy behind these programmes is based on the premise that our own students are our greatest resource and that junior secondary students are more likely to be influenced by positive role models closer to their own age These programmes include the following:

Peer Support
Involves all year 9 students during term 1 working in small groups with trained student senior Peer Support leaders. The aim of the programme is to forge lasting links between junior students and positive senior role models; to assist with orientation; and to address issues of common concern such as friendship, communication, problem-solving, and trust. The programme is discussion based with a lot of games and fun activities.

Peer Mediation

Takapuna Grammar is one of many schools getting students involved in dealing with the harassment that occurs in all high schools.

What is Peer Mediation?
Peer mediation is a confidential student run programme that provides Takapuna Grammar students with a chance to deal with harassment without enforcing school disciplinary action. The service is provided during school in a safe, secure and confidential environment with the two occupants of the dispute. This is a voluntary programme in which both parties want the same outcome: resolving the situation, making sure it doesn’t escalate and gives individuals the opportunity to state their side of events and their feelings on the situation.

Our mediators are confidential, compassionate people who are trained to deal with the common areas of harassment in high schools. If you have any queries about mediation don’t hesitate to ask at the student services office or at the counsellor’s office. Alternatively keep a look out for our mediators in the school grounds, you can distinguish them by their mediator badges.

Peer Mentoring
Since 2003 the school has had a programme of Peer Mentoring where individual senior students take on the responsibility of meeting regularly with a junior student who would benefit from the friendship and guidance of a peer mentor.
The mentors are trained to work with issues such as developing friendships, problem solving, goal setting and co-curricular involvement. Confidentiality between the mentor and mentoree is important. If you have any queries about being involved in this programme please contact the counsellors' office or

Peer Sexuality
The Peer Sexuality programme involves a small group of Year 12 students who are trained to support their peers in making healthy choices in regard to their sexual health and sexuality. During their training the PSSP team are provided with accurate information and access to resources, and they are taught communication skills so that they can discuss all aspects of sexuality with their peers in a confidential way. These include subjects such as contraception, STIs, pregnancy, and gay and lesbian issues.

Peer Tutoring
Senior students have the opportunity to help students who need assistance with their academic studies. This may be in class, in the Learning Support department or after school hours. This has been particularly effective in the Homework Club.
