ESOL - English as a Second LanguageSaturday, 30 December 1899
pA considerable percentage of the students at Takapuna Grammar are from a non-English speaking background (NESB). NESB students can be permanent residents or fee paying students and while not all of them require ESOL support, most come into contact with the department in some capacity. The responsibility of the department is to ensure that the academic and social needs of these students are met. The role of the department is diverse – a blend of social and academic aims and a commitment to assist not only the students but also the parents, caregivers, deans and teaching staff to bridge gaps in understanding and to ensure that the New Zealand learning experience is a positive one. To achieve this, regular meetings are held at the school with parents, students and caregivers with translation support. In addition, teaching programmes are carefully chosen to address the language needs of students and to empower them to reach their potential.
