From the TGS Board Chairman
Dear Parents and Guardians
I was amazed at the strength and depth of student achievement I have seen being celebrated at School over the past two weeks: Senior prize giving, Sports Awards evening, Performing Arts and later this week the Art Exhibition. All are wonderful celebrations of personal excellence. The following is from the speech I gave at Senior Prizegiving.
Sometimes it is worthwhile just stopping and reflecting for a while, to assess where you’ve come from and how much we have together, as a team, achieved.
We should all take the time to look back and see how we have learnt and grown, informed by the team around us: our family, friends, teachers and support staff – some of the good decisions we’ve taken, some of the bad and what we’ve learnt from them. Setting you up for lifelong learning is what Team TGS is all about.
How you conduct yourself in life impacts those around you. A team is made up of individuals but to be truly world class, that team must work together and share a common purpose, direction and goal – and a commitment to each other. We are fortunate at Team TGS to have staff led by an outstanding Principal Simon and his Senior Management Team, who believe passionately in enabling you, our students, to achieve your best, with the help of your families and the wider school community. The extra time staff and parents put into sports, the arts, debating, exotic field trips, fundraising by the PTA and numerous other activities enable you to compete in championships, dance competitions, Duke of Edinburgh Awards and get up really early when it’s cold, dark and of course wet! All of this goes on behind the scenes throughout the year to provide you with opportunities to stretch and test yourself and we are truly grateful to staff, parents and coaches for their support to Team TGS!
Team TGS consists of many players, but there are a handful I’d like to acknowledge today, whose hard work with their own small teams, have made significant contributions to our overall success.
I would particularly like to acknowledge the hard work of Associate Principal Terry Holding and the team of staff and teachers who have worked tirelessly and learnt new skills in order to enable our school to be able to offer another choice to students, through the International Baccalaureate programme.
Deputy Principal Brian Wynn and his team of staff and helpers including students, pulled off an amazing feat of successfully updating our computer network this year to make it faster and even more accessible to all by bringing your own computers, and his work continues.
From cyberspace to down to earth and our buildings and grounds, our Property Manager Mike Barlow, whose enthusiasm, dedication and passion has brought a different perspective and raised the standard of what a Property Manager does at a school. He retires at the end of this year and we and his team of ground staff will miss him dearly.
Mark Twain said: "Keep away from people who belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great." Team TGS is full of great people empowering you too, to become great.
The Staff Achievement Award introduced by The Board of Trustees is about recognising those great teachers who enable their students to achieve greatness. We asked you, the students to vote for the teacher who in your view had helped you achieve success and then looked at the NCEA results achieved by their students and the extra work put in to Team TGS. This year the recipient who has contributed the most to improving student achievement in Takapuna Grammar School is Nick Whiting.
Nick is a renowned and enthusiastic young teacher in the Social Sciences department, characterised by a deep understanding of content material and effervescent delivery. He really does bring the Classics to life in an engaging way and has a truly exciting career ahead of him.
I thank you all; students, staff and parents, for contributing to the success of Team TGS.
Good Luck in your exams and to those who have only a few more weeks left at school, best wishes for the future and as Abraham Lincoln said, “The best way to predict your future is to create it.”
Mark McCall, Chair of the Board of Trustees.
Best Wishes
Mark McCall
